Pregnant woman in Ottawa holding a cup of Pregnancy Collagen Hot Chocolate.

It's officially February which means we can start talking about all things chocolate related. Actually, scratch that. When is it not a good time to talk about chocolate?! When prepared using quality ingredients, hot chocolate can be a nutritious and supportive drink for pregnant and non pregnant bodies alike!

Before we dive into sharing how to make it, let's talk about the benefits of these ingredients!

Collagen Powder - Collagen is a type of protein that supports skin elasticity, joint health, and connective tissue. Anecdotally, collagen can reduce the incidence of stretch marks. More importantly, collagen support the health of the joints and provides extra protein which is in high demand during pregnancy.

Raw Cacao Powder - Cacao is a superfood! Cacao is rich in magnesium, antioxidants, and iron. It also supports muscle function, energy, and circulation. The magnesium in cacao may also help with leg cramps and supporting relaxation.

Medjool Dates - Dates are full of potassium, fibre, and iron! Some health providers also recommend enjoying dates regularly in the last few weeks of pregnancy as a way to support cervical readiness and shorten the first phase of labour. Dates are also an unrefined way to sweeten your hot chocolate without added sugar.!

Butter, Ghee, or Coconut Oil - Healthy fats are essential during pregnancy for hormone production and nutrient absorption. Ghee provides fat-soluble vitamins A, D, and K2. Coconut oil gives medium-chain fats for quick energy. Plus, adding this little bit of fat will make your hot chocolate extra creamy and delicious!

Sea Salt - Sea salt provides trace minerals that support electrolyte balance and improve hydration. It's also helpful for if you are experiencing mild pregnancy swelling.

Let's create the recipe!

Ingredients

1 serving collagen powder

1 tablespoon raw cacao powder

1–2 soft Medjool dates, pitted

1 tablespoon butter, ghee, or coconut oil

A pinch of sea salt

⅛–¼ teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Pour the hot milk into the blender with the remaining ingredients. Blend until completely smooth and lightly frothy. Transfer to your favourite mug and enjoy warm.

  2. Optional tip: If your dates are firm, soak them briefly in hot water before blending for an extra-smooth hot chocolate.
