The first few weeks after welcoming your baby are filled with both joy AND are a huge adjustment. Every family’s experience looks a little different, and it’s completely normal to feel a mix of emotions during this time. Recovering from birth, learning your baby’s cues, finding your rhythm with feeding, and catching up on rest can all take time. Having the right support can make a big difference in helping those early days feel calmer and more supported. That is where an experienced postpartum doula in Ottawa can help. Today, we’re excited to introduce you to our wonderful postpartum doula, Candy De Jesus, and hear directly from her about what inspires her work and how she supports families during this transformative time.
1.What inspired you to become a postpartum doula, and what do you love most about the work?
Before moving to Canada, my days revolved around reports, and endless spreadsheets. Buried in all the paperwork, I realized I wasn’t meant for a life behind a desk! I’m too much of a people person! That realization sparked a passion for hospitality, where I spent seven wonderful years working in 5-star hotels.
When the pandemic brought my hospitality career to a halt, I promised myself that my next chapter would be guided by my heart. I wanted to work with children and animals! Becoming an early childhood assistant changed everything. My homesickness lessened with ever every hug and every joyful “Ms. Candy!” I received.
One day, a parent told me, “You’d make a wonderful postpartum doula.” That passing comment opened a a new door . As I learned more, I came to know that postpartum work deeply resonates with me. Postpartum support isn’t just about caring for babies it’s about empowering women and supporting families. It's also about being a steady, joyful presence during one of life’s most tender transitions. This work has quickly become a calling. Every new family I work with reminds me that I’m exactly where I’m meant to be, which is helping families feel supported, seen, and celebrated!!
2..What’s one thing new parents are often surprised to learn during the postpartum period?
One of the biggest surprises for new parents is how quickly their own needs fade into the background. In the whirlwind of the busy postpartum period, parents can get caught up with their own anxiety, loneliness, and even guilt for wanting a moment to themselves. Parents often forget to care for themselves. They push through their own exhaustion and, often, believe that asking for help means they are not enough.
In reality, parents need care too! Taking good care of yourself during your postpartum isn't selfish.. it's essential! Truthfully, a well nurtured parent is the greatest gift for a baby!
3.How do you support families emotionally and practically in those first few weeks after birth?
First, I always intend to show up to postpartum visits with compassion, calm, and with a light heart. Emotionally, I’m a good listener and gentle encourager. No matter what is going on in a household on any given day, I hold space for every feeling and offer a reassuring presence.
Practically, I provide hands on care for baby. I’m also always ready to roll up my sleeves helping with laundry, tidying, or preparing light meals. My intention is to gives parents a chance to rest and recharge!
4.What’s one tip you give all your clients to help make the postpartum period smoother?
My one tip is to embrace the postpartum by giving yourself grace. The early days with a hew baby are beautiful, but also messy and unpredictable. Give yourself grace when things don’t go as planned and remember you are doing your best, and your best is good enough! Also, trust your instincts! You know your baby better than anyone.
5.What’s your “doula superpower”? That one thing clients always rave about or that you know you’re really good at?
Adaptability is my doula superpower! Every family is different. I love adjusting my approach to meet each family’s unique needs. Practically, that may look like adapting to a babies new routine, or trying new comfort techniques as needed. Whatever the baby and family needs! I also think that parents appreciate my calm and encouraging energy.
